Field Diary: Biodiversity inside an industrial landscape

We had the opportunity to be part of a rapid biodiversity assessment at a large-scale manufacturing facility. What stood out wasn’t just the data we collected but the story the landscape told.

Walking through the core industrial premises, we observed something often overlooked nature quietly thriving within engineered spaces. A well-planned greenbelt, flowering plants, and avenue trees were not just aesthetic additions; they were functioning habitats. A large number of bees, butterflies, birds, and bats were active indicators of a living, breathing ecosystem within the facility.

As we moved outward into the buffer zones, the scrublands, agricultural patches, and built-up areas reflected higher human pressure and fragmented habitats. The shift in biodiversity patterns between these two zones was a powerful reminder:

Biodiversity doesn’t just depend on location, it depends on how we manage our landscapes.

Being part of the field team, Albert has assisted Parth in documenting flora species, observing habitats, and contributing to real-time ecological assessments that gave us a deeper appreciation of how small, intentional interventions can create meaningful ecological impact.

A few key takeaways from the experience:

  • Industrial spaces, when designed thoughtfully, can support biodiversity and ecosystem services

  • Greenbelt planning is not just compliance, it’s conservation in action

  • Even in highly modified environments, nature finds a way, if we make space for it

This experience reinforced a simple but powerful idea:

Nature is not separate from business but it exists within it, around it, and because of the choices we make.

To sum up, we can say that integrating ecological principles into infrastructure planning is essential for achieving long-term sustainability, regulatory alignment, and ecosystem resilience.
